ASEZ Crime Prevention Seminar at Oklahoma City Police Headquarters Highlights CPTED and Community Safety

July 31, 2024

On July 31, 2024, the ASEZ volunteer movement hosted an impactful Crime Prevention Seminar at the Oklahoma City Police Department Headquarters, bringing together community members, law enforcement, and public safety advocates to explore proactive methods for reducing crime. Around 35 people attended the event, which emphasized both education and collaboration in promoting safer neighborhoods across Oklahoma City.

Among its many initiatives worldwide, ASEZ actively promotes crime prevention efforts that strengthen community awareness and cooperation with local authorities.

Central to ASEZ’s crime prevention agenda is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) — a strategy that seeks to deter criminal behavior by shaping and improving the physical and social environment where people live, work, and play.

CPTED is founded on the idea that the thoughtful design and maintenance of buildings, public spaces, and streets can significantly reduce opportunities for crime, while enhancing residents’ sense of security.

Key principles of CPTED include:

Natural Surveillance — arranging spaces to increase visibility so that residents and passersby can see and be seen, discouraging criminal activity.

Natural Access Control — guiding movement through design features like lighting, pathways, and landscaping to limit opportunities for unauthorized entry.

Territorial Reinforcement — using physical cues such as signage, fences, and maintained property to signal community ownership and care.

Maintenance — keeping environments well-kept to communicate attention and oversight, which can further deter unlawful behavior.

These strategies illustrate how environmental design — from lighting and landscaping to building layout — influences human behavior and reduces the likelihood of crime before it occurs.

The seminar featured a dynamic presentation from Master Sergeant Robert Skalla of the Oklahoma City Police Department, who spoke passionately about how the department incorporates proactive tactics to reduce crime across the city. His insights on community policing, collaboration, and safety education resonated with attendees, reinforcing the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches to crime prevention.

Throughout the session, participants learned how CPTED principles can complement traditional law enforcement efforts. Attendees engaged with examples of how environmental design — such as improved lighting in public areas, clearer sight lines in neighborhoods, and active community spaces — can foster safer environments in both urban and suburban settings.

The seminar underscored ASEZ’s commitment to empowering individuals with practical knowledge and tools to make their communities safer. By linking academic concepts like CPTED with real-world policing strategies and grassroots engagement, the event fostered a spirit of partnership between volunteers and law enforcement.

This seminar continues ASEZ’s global mission of promoting not only environmental stewardship but also crime prevention and civic responsibility, illustrating how informed citizens and empowered communities can contribute to public safety in meaningful ways.
